ACUPUNCTURE

Is it safe?

Yes. Acupuncture is extremely safe. Strict hygiene standards are adhered to and single use sterile needles are used, then discarded after each treatment.

Will it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine (less than 0.25mm in diameter) this allows relatively painless insertion. Once the needle is in place there may be varying sensations: tingling, distension, heaviness, warmth, aching or numbness at the point itself or radiating along the meridian. Needling sensations are individual to each person.

I don't like needles, can I still be treated?

Yes. Once a diagnosis has been made other modalities and techniques can be used including: shiatsu, acupressure, moxibustion, cupping, chi kung or exercise

Are there any side effects?

Adverse side effects are relatively few. You may feel calm or sleepy following the treatment due to the body's need to re-energise allowing the healing process to begin. In certain cases some conditions may remain relatively unchanged or worsen slightly after initial treatments before improvements commence. Slight bruising at needle insertion site is rare.

How long is the treatment?

Typically treatments are between 45 – 60 minutes. The first treatment may be longer to allow sufficient time for relevant information to be obtained.

How many treatments will I need?

The number and frequency of treatments vary depending on the type and severity of the condition, usually one treatment per week is adequate. However there are situations where two or three treatments in a week may be necessary. A typical treatment course is six weeks. Many people have regular treatments for preventative measures or to manage long term health problems.

Yes. Acupuncture is safe to have while having other treatments or taking medication. Please inform your therapist of any medication you are taking prior to treatment.
